Door County, Wisconsin |
|
Found the ideal summer resort area – Door County, Wisconsin – spread across a narrow peninsula jutting out into Lake Michigan and defined by its 300 miles of pristine shoreline (calm Wisconsin Bay on its west coast & active waters of Lake Michigan on its east coast), dairy farms, picturesque lighthouses, exquisite bluffs and parks,19th century Scandinavian villages, friendly people, plethora of outdoor activities and cultural attractions, but this paradise is without crowds and pretensions and until now the Mid-Westerner’s best kept secret. Visited Bay Breeze Resort with its own pristine beach in the town of Ephraim – brimming with boutiques, art galleries, historical homes + Wilson’s Ice Cream Parlor (the lines go around the block); New Yardley Inn in Bailey Harbor – a B&B in the center of the peninsula; and the Bridgeport Waterfront Resort in Sturgeon Bay – the main town - filled with art galleries, art studios, & museums. Took a ferry ride to beautiful Washington Island and a stop at the Washington Hotel, Restaurant, & Culinary School – a restored 1800’s inn. Boundless outdoor activities: para-sailed in Ephraim, kayaking yoga tour (Door County Kayak Tours) on Lake Michigan, horseback rode on 500 acres of wooded trails at Kurtz Corral; visited Orchard County Winery – also famous for its delicious cherry pies; and went gallery hopping at Clay Bay Pottery, Blue Dolphin House, Edgewood Orchid Galleries. Unique Dining Experiences: White Gull Inn - famous for its fish boil; Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant – breakfasted on their legendary lingonberry pancakes; or just go pub hopping to experience old-fashioned Wisconsin nightlife. Endless Summer Theater & Performing Arts: the American Folklore Theater; the Peninsula Players Theatre – charming rustic waterfront playhouse; and the Birch Creek Performance Center - music festivals, theater, mentoring programs & workshops throughout the summer. Door County is the ultimate summer playground for the entire family. The Visitor’s Bureau phone number says it all…800-52-RELAX.

| Kentucky Redbuds |
|
‘April in Kentucky’ – the destination for the spring pilgrimage to Redbud month. Southern and Eastern Kentucky are blessed with an abundance of natural beauty – great forests and mountains, but they pale next to Redbud season – an infinite sea of graceful trees covered with brilliant rose-colored blossoms that demand your attention along rural Kentucky roadsides - standing out against the stark early unspoiled spring Kentucky landscapes. Add mountain country music, festivals, mountain crafts, delicious homecooked food and homegrown neighborliness.
The 47-county region of Southern & Eastern Kentucky is the best place to experience the beauty of the Redbud. Three National Scenic Byways – the Cumberland Cultural Heritage Hwy, State Scenic Byway, and numerous secondary roads (I-75, US25E, US23,US119) all lead to glorious places. Stop at Cumberland Falls – 2nd largest falls in the East (after Niagara), Red River Gorge – more natural arches than anywhere else in the US except Arches National Monument in Utah, scenic and historic Cumberland Gap, the coal mining towns of Benham (visit the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum here and spend the night at the unique Benham Schoolhouse Inn) and Lynch (visit Portal 31 – a coal mine converted into a museum). All along the way is a dramatic display of these beautiful trees swathed in resplendent pink flowers. Passing through this area in April - a stop to capture the beauty of this countryside is a prerequisite – springtime in Eastern Kentucky is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Kentucky Redbuds - Spring’s answer to fall foliage. (www.tourseky.com)

Taos, New Mexico |

|
Taos, NM – wild and beautiful landscapes; the best cuisine in NM; romantic Bed & Breakfasts; abundance of outdoor activities; native American, Spanish & Anglo cultures; and even llama trekking. Taos is a tiny village in character – an artist’s commune. We began with a scenic drive to San Francisco de Asis Church, an adobe Mission church hand-built in early 1700’s; Taos Pueblo - the only existing multi-storied pueblo complex where the Pueblo Indians have lived for more than a millennium still with no running water or electricity; the Rios Grande Gorge Bridge – a suspension bridge 650 feet above raging river rapids; and a stop at Taos Mountain Casino. Onto pristine wilderness with a gourmet lunch & hike down to the banks of the Rio Grande with Wild Earth Llama Adventures. And, a visit to the “Earthship” - a community in the Taos desert of self-sufficient homes built out of recycled materials (auto tires, discarded cans and bottles) – heats and cools itself via solar/thermal dynamics - produces its own power and water from rain and snow melt – treats its own sewage – fully sustainable living. Then to the Millicent Rogers Museum – the best Native American and Spanish art and the Harwood Foundation – historical and contemporary paintings and sculptures by New Mexican artists. Taos dining – mostly organic, eclectic, and delicious….Doc Martin’s at the Historic Taos Inn – contemporary American with NM influence; Graham’s Grill – kudos to Chef Leslie for scrumptious short ribs and salmon ; Ronnie Lee’s Fire Grill & Wine Bar – try the blue cheese steak; and Sabroso Restaurant – wonderful, the prices modest. B&B’s proliferate in Taos – our choice - the beautiful Dobson House Bed & Breakfast – a 100% solar-powered B&B with the Rio Grande at its front door and the Dona Luz Inn, an enchanting 200 year-old inn decorated in Spanish colonial style plus location – smack in the center of town. Taos - synonymous with art galleries, festivals, wineries, sustainable living, historical sites; home to Kit Carson, Georgia O’Keefe, Julia Roberts – a tiny town but internationally renowned! Alabama Gulf Coast |
|
The lure of the Alabama Gulf Coast (aka Gulf Shores, Alabama’s Beautiful Beaches, Southern Rivera) - 32 miles of pristine, powdery white sand beaches, translucent turquoise waters, wooded inland areas with fresh water lakes & bayous, old-fashioned southern hospitality – warm balmy climate, beautiful inland waterways for dolphin watching or romantic sunset dinner sailings, hiking, biking, sailing, festivals, kayaking, golf, historic sites or just catching ‘fresh’ delicious dinner. Sound like paradise? It is - 50 miles SE of Mobile & 35 miles W of Pensacola, FL. Ideal for family, romantic get-away, or just getting away – ‘can do it all or do nothin’..
Start with a visit to the town of Magnolia Springs. A picture perfect community where moss-draped oaks rim the banks of the Magnolia River (mail boxes at the water’s edge still using water service delivery dating back to the early 1900s) which winds through this century old town & inspired the movies ‘Forest Gump’ & ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’. Whether it dolphin or cormorant watching, enjoying the pristine beaches or freshly caught seafood dinners don’t forget to kickback at one of the nation’s last great roadhouse watering holes straddling the Alabama/Florida line.

Albuquerque, New Mexico – the hot-air ballooning mecca of the world; awash with breathtaking scenery and sunsets, surreal mesa tops; an unrivaled NM landscape with the dramatic Sandia Mountains as a backdrop; mild year round climate that offers both desert flora, pine and fur trees; the center of Native American pueblo country - maintaining its ethnic traditions & heritages but Albuquerque is also witnessing a new revitalization with futuristic museums, trendy restaurants, art galleries; and, boasting the longest stretch of America’s quintessential Main Street - Route 66 – the nostalgic route to decades past. Be it hiking, biking, skiing, golfing, the great outdoors, exploring the converging cultural heritage of the Indian, Hispanic & Anglo; shopping the Native American crafts or fantastic outdoor concerts – ABQ has it all.
Take a ride up the 2.7 mile Sandia Peak Tramway (longest & most striking in the world) which starts in the desert realm of cactus and soars to the pines atop 10,378 foot Sandia Peak with panoramic views of New Mexico’s rocky mountain landscape.

| Lexington, Kentucky |
|
A trip to Lexington, Kentucky, the Bluegrass Country, can be paralleled to a visit to France’s Bordeaux wine country but dotted instead with horse farms (approx. 460) - home to equine aristocracy - the fastest, most beautiful and valuable horses in the world. This NE corner of Kentucky is a visual odyssey of endless groomed pastures, oak woodlands, manicured rural landscapes filled with awe-inspiring thoroughbreds and horse barns looking more like French villas - climate controlled, cupola tops, stained glass windows, & crystal chandeliers - often more imposing than their owner’s antebellum manor houses. Visit Churchill Downs (home of the Kentucky Derby), beautiful Keeneland Racetrack , the Kentucky Horse Park, the Thoroughbred Training Center, Int’l. Museum of the Horse, Hall of Champions (and meet one of the world’s greatest living racehorses –Cigar), and watch the Parade of Breeds.
Horses are not the only attraction – historical homes, wonderful museums, terrific cuisine, and trendy art galleries abound. Lexington is a small city, easy to navigate, has its own symphony orchestra, its own unique personality, its own limestone-rich pastures with green grasses that bloom blue buds, produces bourbon, and has a multi-billion dollar thoroughbred breeding industry. This city is pretty cool and a great place to visit for the entire family.

There is a hidden
jewel in Alabama -- a city called Mobile.
It shares all the attributes that draw the
throngs to the ‘Big Easy’…the annual Mardi Gras
but
bigger (and family
oriented); gracious Southern hospitality;
succulent fresh seafood with Creole & Cajun
influence; a diverse array of music venues,
museums, antebellum mansions, and a historic

architecture. In addition, Mobile has gorgeous
beaches and a terminal for cruise ships – home
to the Carnival Fun Ship – Holiday.
Mobile exudes the French influence of the 18th
century, has turn of the century gardens and
21st century resorts, such as the Alabama Spa
at the Grand Hotel/Marriott (one of the 100
Best Family resorts in North America), The
Battle Ship Hotel and Renaissance
Riverview Plaza Hotel. And it’s easy get a
great meal at the many super restaurants that

Las Vegas, New Mexico is the real McCoy
if you’re seeking breathtaking mountain vistas,
the spirit of an old Western Town preserved in
the architecture of her public buildings and
homes, a still thriving 17th century central
plaza, 900 historically designated buildings,
glorious food, exquisite landscapes, an
abundance of activities, museums, festivals,
close proximity to the National Parks, a warm
and friendly community, and great chili. It is
undiscovered “gold” nestled between Albuquerque
and Santa Fe -- offering all the trappings of
her big sisters -- but resisting exploitation
(and much less expensive) by preserving its rich
history and culture.
With so much exploring to do, it’s easy to work
up an appetite. Just to name a few of the
mouth-watering restaurants worth trying:
Blackjack’s Grill, The Landmark Grill, and
Estella’s. For lodging, The Plaza
Hotel was our choice, a historic
Victorian-style hotel with antiques typical of
the late 19th century old West, a very gracious
staff, and a 4-star restaurant: The Landmark
Grill. Plus, it’s located across from the 17th
century central plaza. A trip to Las Vegas, NM
is no gamble. For info, contact the Chamber of

One of the great resorts/spas in the United
States is Amelia Island Plantation in
Jacksonville, Florida. It has everything --
golf, tennis, fitness center, beach club,
multiple pools, deep-sea fishing, nature
programs, horseback riding, an award winning
kids camp, and a world-class spa -- all of which
are surrounded by moss draped live oak trees
making the island seem a series of oases in a
primeval forest -- until you get to the
magnificent sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean.
We toured the island on the Segway Safari (an
electronically powered personal transport
machine resembling an old-fashioned lawn mover)
and treated ourselves to several spa treatments.
Our accommodations were at the luxurious
Amelia Inn Hotel where every room has a
stunning view of the ocean. There is also
sumptuous cuisine at the Plantation’s
restaurants – The Verandah Restaurant
for casual dining and fresh seafood, the
Sabal Palm Room of the Ocean Grill for
elegant dining and a spectacular view of the

The best adventures are detours off the beaten
path -- the road less traveled where the small
subtleties make the big difference…and the main
reason we visited the “culturally cool town” of
Belfast and her surroundings in Waldo
County, Maine. Here we reveled in the
natural beauty of mid-coast quintessential
Maine, the down-to-earth friendly residents, the
activities, the dramatic coastline, the historic
sites and museums, the fresh lobster and
blueberry pancakes, and the forests thick with
October leaves of reds and oranges, which take
your breath away. And, by the way, there are 170
factory outlet shops in nearby Freeport.
Waldo County has a wonderful array of Bed &

Alden House, Wealthy Poor House, and The
Penobscot Bay & Restaurant, where we settled
in…a 5-acre hillside retreat overlooking
beautiful Penobscot Bay. The front parlor serves
as a 4-star restaurant and the living room,
another focal point, is where we spent every

times, they’re not to be missed.

Windflower Inn
684 South Egremont Road
Great Barrington, MA 01230

www.windflowerinn.com |
A
gracious antique-filled Inn, the Windflower
is family owned and operated, making the
atmosphere friendly, casual and quiet. While the
B&B lends itself to a romantic weekend, the
Windflower is one of the few Inns in the
Berkshires that welcome children.
Each day at the Windflower is started with a
wonderful homemade breakfast and then there’s
plenty to do in the area depending on the
season. Warmer weather offers concerts at
Tanglewood, Shakespeare at The Mount (Edith
Wharton’s estate), nearby hiking, fishing,
canoeing, golf, tennis, biking, and the
Windflower’s own swimming pool. There’s great
skiing during the winter months, and antique and
outlet shopping all year long. There’s also the
Norman Rockwell Museum, one of our personal
favorites.

Woodloch Pines is a family owned and
operated, all-inclusive vacation resort that
completely caters to families. They offer a
plethora of activities for all ages in all
seasons ranging from arts & crafts to winter
hayrides. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms
are spotless and the food is abundant. There is
no day camp or nursery at Woodloch, it’s all
about having fun together as a family. Although,
they do offer P.M. babysitting if you want to
catch the Broadway-style theme show in the
nightclub. Woodloch is one of our favorite
family getaways.
